In cyberculture, Jailbreaking is the hacking of a device running off of an Apple operating system to ‘free’ it of its limitations imposed by the Apple Corporation. By jailbreaking the operating system of an individual’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch the user gains access to applications or apps that are not available from the Apple App Store. The user still has access to the app store as well as iTunes but after jailbreaking their phone they are no longer limited to only Apple related functions. Similarly, on phones that use the Android operating system this process is termed rooting.
While jailbreaking your iPhone opens you and your device up to a whole world of new and exciting applications that can occupy your time for hours on end, there are a few possible downsides.; 1. You can’t download updates for your iPhone without having to jailbreak it again each time. 2. You could overload your iPhone with more programs than Apple intended for the device, draining your battery. 3. Your device could be more susceptible to viruses after being jailbroken. 4. Jailbreaking your device voids the Apple warranty. This list of pros and cons is a good example of how jailbreaking your mobile device is most relevant to hacking culture, hacking the operating system creates the potential for more functions while at the same time opening up the possibilities for bad things to happen to your device.
